The Louisville Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is coordinating the disaster relief operation for the majority of the Commonwealth of Kentucky as well as parts of Southern Indiana.

We'll have more information about the scope of our response soon, but here are some views of what the Red Cross has done in Kentucky so far.

Our shelter was at the KY Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, KY, and we hosted New Orleans residents who were evacuated from Hurricane Gustav for 8 days.

Hurricane Ike and Gustav: The Louisville Response

Here are some facts and figures from the Hurricane Ike Windstorm and Hurricane Gustav Shelter disaster relief operations. Your Louisville Area Chapter at work!

Since August 29th, the Louisville Area Chapter has:

• Involved 1,157 volunteers


• Provided shelter for 1,700 people for a total of 11,000 overnight shelter stays


• Served 126,000 meals and snacks


• Set up 3,000 cots and used 6,000 blankets


• Distributed 5,000 comfort kits with basic toiletry items

Thanks to all of our partners, volunteers, and supporters. This is not just a Red Cross response but a community response.
