Molly Malone's Haitian Relief Music Festival

Come show your support for the people of Haiti while enjoying an evening out with your friends!

Molly Malone’s in St. Matthews is hosting a Haitian Relief Music Festival this Thursday, February 18 from 5:00 – 11:00 p.m. Five local bands including Sunday Six, Speed Limit, Local Villains, Ruff Patches and Boltz and Ellison will perform throughout the evening. Admission is $10 with raffle prizes being offered all night.

All admission proceeds and additional donations from the event will go the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund.

It has been over a month since the deadly earthquake struck Port au Prince, but the Red Cross/Red Crescent remains in Haiti providing some 400,000 people with emergency needs. To date over $255 million has been donated to the Haiti Relief and Development Fund with $80 million being committed to provide the most urgent needs to those affected by the disaster.

"Many Hands Make the Load Lighter"

"Men anpil chay pa lou" or "Many hands make the load lighter" says this T-shirt created by Dominican Republic designers Thomas De Santis and Ivan Tarrazo Sanchez-- a very "fitting" saying in light of the on-going diasaster in Haiti.

The T-shirt, which was inspired by Haitian street art, is being sold for $10 on threadless.com with all proceeds benefiting the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund. So far the endeavor has raised $70,000. Due to the T-shirt's popularity, threadless plans to raise their donation cap and print up to 15,000 more.

Rockin' for Haiti

Ratio presents the Red Cross with the $414 they raised at their show Saturday night.

Over the last two weeks millions of people have shown their compassion and support for those affected by the Haiti earthquakes, and this past Saturday a few more were added to the list. Local teen band Ratio, a classic rock cover band, raised $414 during a show to benefit Haiti at the Rudyard Kipling.

Although the band knew they were rallying for a good cause, they were even more touched by the disaster when an audience member announced her new niece was flying in from Haiti at that very moment, ending a three-year adoption wait.

Holly Stewart, Ratio lead singer and guitarist, said after the announcement by the soon-to-be aunt, the benefit turned into a celebration.

Brrrrrrrrr, it’s cold out there!

In case you haven’t noticed, it’s a bit cold outside, and it’s only going to get colder. During winter months, the Red Cross sees an increase in home fires due to the use of space heaters, furnaces and fireplaces. Of course, the Red Cross doesn’t want you to freeze, but we do encourage that you keep a few things in mind while you’re trying to stay warm.

Follow the tips below to help keep everyone out of the cold.

• If you must use a space heater, keep it on a hard, flat surface at least three feet away from flammable objects.

• NEVER use a stove or oven to heat your home.

• NEVER leave portable heaters, wood burning stoves or fireplaces unattended, and turn them off before you go to bed.
